A House committee unanimously passed a bill Monday morning that would amend Utah's criminal code to include text messaging over a cell phone as a crime for enticing a minor for sex.
HB327, sponsored by Rep. Kerry Gibson, R-Ogden, would include text messaging as a crime if someone uses the service to entice a minor for sex. Currently, the language of Utah's enticement law only includes contact over the Internet.
Gibson told lawmakers Monday that with advances in mobile technology, sexual predators can reach minors without using the Internet.
The bill is expected to move to the House floor for further debate and vote.
