We see those "payday loan" companies — with their outrageous interest rates — on just about every corner. They can argue that it's legal, that they're helping the poor while taking their money, but that doesn't make it right.

For some odd reason, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff spends a lot of energy defending the interests of these loan companies. What does this debate reveal about our values? Freedom and liberty are indeed very empowering, but this kind of unlimited freedom allows the strong to exploit the weak and vulnerable.

Keeping a check on the tendency of the powerful to move toward tyranny helps balance the whole social system. Inequality is a fact of our social reality, but allowing this financial predation of the unfortunate clashes with our hopeful ideals of fairness and compassion.

Unlimited interest leads to unlimited power. Let's be reasonable. Put a cap on it.
