Utah senior guard Johnnie Bryant has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Bryant, an Oakland, Calif., native, led the Utes to a 1-1 record in conference play last week, recording back-to-back 20-point performances off the bench. In an overtime loss at New Mexico (67-77), Bryant scored a season-high 25 points. In Utah's win over TCU (74-58), Bryant set a new Utah single-game record with eight 3-pointers on the way to scoring 24 points.
Also, Utah's Kalee Whipple has been named the Mountain West Conference's Co-Player of the Week. Whipple led her team to two victories last week as the Utes overcame both New Mexico and TCU.She scored 10 of the team's final 17 points, playing a key role in Utah's come-from-behind rally against New Mexico.
Whipple went 5-for-6 from the field down the stretch, enabling Utah to erase a 14-point deficit in the win. Whipple wrapped up the New Mexico tilt with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting, and had seven rebounds and four assists against the Lobos.
Against TCU, she scored Utah's first 11 points and went on to score 18 of the team's 25 first-half points. She shares the award, her second weekly honor, with San Diego State's Jen Morris.
