Smith's Food & Drug Stores now offers reusable shopping bags through its "Choose to Reuse" program. They resemble canvas but are made of polypropylene, a form of plastic that is nontoxic, washable, water-repellent and can hold more than three plastic bags' worth of groceries. The insulated bag for hot or cold foods is $1.99 and the regular bag is 79 cents. Display racks are located at the front entrance of Smith's stores near the checkout lanes.

In addition, Smith's has launched a major plastic recycling program called "Bag 2 Bag." Barrels have been placed in each Smith's store to allow customers to donate plastic grocery bags for recycling.
