Above left from left to right, hazmat team member Jeff Cunningham, firefighter David Banner and Capt. Brian Gale discuss an opening they've just made in the roof of Cottonwood Mall during a Unified Fire Authority training session at the closed mall in Holladay. Crews practiced cutting holes in the roof and opening locked doors inside the mall. Above right, Darran Taylor adjusts his helmet as others climb a fire ladder to the roof of the mall. At left, firefighter Steve Darlington climbs the fire ladder. The empty mall has served as a training site for the firefighters. But the training ground won't last long. The mall is being demolished and will be replaced with a "European-style village," including commercial and residential development. The project will comprise 11 blocks and is expected to include a grocery store and community hot spot — a gathering plaza.
