TOOELE — Sentencing has been delayed for a Stansbury Park man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death.

John Bevan, 49, appeared here in 3rd District Court for a brief hearing on Tuesday for what was supposed to be his sentencing. Instead, he was shipped off to prison for a 60-day mental evaluation before he is to be sentenced on April 1.

"He's been diagnosed for years with schizophrenia," Tooele County Attorney Doug Hogan said.

Bevan pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree felony murder in the death of Tina Rene Evans. Police said Bevan stabbed Evans, 42, as she lay in bed back in August 2006. Two of Evans' children were in the home when the deadly attack happened.
