OREM — A 94-year-old Bountiful man is in critical condition at University Hospital in Salt Lake after his car collided with another vehicle and a semitrailer truck on northbound I-15 Monday night.

The elderly man apparently became disoriented as he neared the University Parkway exit just after 7 p.m. and attempted to make a left-hand turn out of the middle lane.

The turning vehicle was struck by another car, and both vehicles careened into the concrete center barrier. The impact spun the older driver's Buick back onto the freeway where the car was rear ended by an oncoming truck, witnesses told the Utah Highway Patrol.

The UHP shut down northbound I-15 for 90 minutes to extricate the man from his car and allow a medical helicopter to land. The man's condition was deteriorating as the helicopter took flight, a UHP trooper said.

The 28-year-old driver of the other car was sent to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center by ambulance with moderate injuries. The truck driver was unharmed.
