As a Canadian visiting Salt Lake City, I was astounded upon opening the paper on Jan. 10 and finding, just above the front page story on Kristy Ragsdale's husband being accused of killing his wife with a handgun, a large orange sticker: "This Weekend, Gun Show & Sale, Bring This Coupon for One Dollar Discount." In the 1980s a courageous editor of the Kingston Whig-Standard in Ontario decided to ban all tobacco advertising in his newspaper. This was a step in a citizen-led movement that eventually saw the federal government in Ottawa impose strict regulations on tobacco advertising and promotion. Utah has taken some steps to end the tobacco epidemic. Is it not time to take a look at curbing the slaughter from firearms in your country?
