Music and charity.

It's almost as natural as rock 'n' roll. In fact, many music acts — not just rock musicians — are involved in charity. And some even do it voluntarily without it being a term of their court sentencing.

Well, one of the big daddies of music and charity is the Hard Rock Cafe. Throughout the years, the franchise has taken many charities under its wing and sponsored musicians to work with those charities.

One of the best ways to raise money for these charities is through its Signature Series T-shirt sales. While Hard Rock Cafe is famous for the Hard Rock T-shirt, throughout the years, the corporation has allowed musicians to design their own Signature Series shirt for charity.

In the past, notable artists such as Don Henley of the Eagles, John Mellencamp, Peter Gabriel and Elton John have designed shirts to raise money for the likes of Iris Fund/Walden Woods Project, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Foundation, Witness foundation and Elton John Aids Foundation, respectively.

Other artists such as Megadeth, Stevie Nicks, Green Day and REM's Michael Stipe have designed shirts for the respective ECO (Earth Communications Office), Special Olympics, Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to save Darfur and Artists for a New South Africa.

The most recent and obvious artist to land a T-shirt/charity agreement with Hard Rock Cafe is U2 singer Bono.

Bono, born Paul Hewson, designed his "Fish Can Fly" shirt that emphasizes "Anything Is Possible" for the Wildlife Conservation Society's Cotton Conservation Initiative. The initiative provides African farmers with education on proper land management, organic cotton-growing techniques and wildlife conservation. These programs are designed to help the farmers out of poverty.

The shirt, available exclusively at all Hard Rock Cafes and www.hardrock.com, was produced by edun LIVE, a shirt company founded by Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson.

While Bono is world famous for his political activism and music, the Signature Series T-shirts are another avenue for him to help the world become a better place.

Think what you will about Bono, but he is one musician/rock star/activist who tries to do what he sings about.
