A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after being stabbed in a gang-related fight at a St. George park.

Police said the boy was walking with a girl through Dixie Downs Park on Saturday night, when he was attacked by a half-dozen young men.

"They're hitting him, kicking him, somebody had a baseball bat and brought that into the altercation," St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said Monday. "Somebody else pulled out a knife and stabbed him numerous times in the back."

The girl took off running and called for help. She told officers she saw the attackers get into a dark-colored SUV and flee the scene. The boy was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in fair condition, where he was treated for his injuries, including a possible punctured lung.

Harding said the boy is reported to be OK.

Police and the gang task force are investigating. School resource officers also were contacted to be alert for anyone bragging or taking credit for the attack.

"We think it's gang related, because one gang was involved and they yelled out the name of the gang as they left," Harding said.
