PROVO — Provo Canyon was the hot spot for icy roads Wednesday afternoon with eight accidents and one slide-off.

Around milepost 10 on U.S. 189 in both directions, a wet spot froze into black ice, causing drivers to lose control of their cars and crash or slide off, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Cameron Roden.

One 50-year-old woman slid off the road in a minivan at the site, which is near Bridal Veil Falls. Afterward, she got out of her car to direct traffic around her vehicle.

A convertible coming around the same corner also went out of control and crashed into her, Roden said. She was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with significant but not life-threatening injuries, Roden said.

The other driver was not injured, nor were drivers in the other eight accidents.

Some drivers were cited for driving too fast for the conditions.
