BOYS: Five guards make up the starting lineup for the Bonneville boys basketball team, at least that is how coach Blair Garner sees it. Cody Larsen is a 6-4 senior guard for the Lakers who shoots the 3-pointer and can post up.
However he scores, he does it well. He puts the ball in the hoop with a regularity that nets him third place in the entire state at 23 points per game.
Now rebounds may be another matter for the Lakers.
"Our biggest obstacle is rebounding," said Garner. "We put five guys on the floor that can handle the ball, so someone has to go in and do the dirty work." And that chore goes to Justin Zizumbo, an all-region football player who comes in off the bench to give the Lakers a physical presence.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First the starting five for Bonneville after Larsen are: Jordan Smith, a 6-0 guard who handles the ball well and can penetrate and shoot. He is Bonneville's second-leading scorer at 12 points per game. Chaz Burt is only 5-9, but he hit a 30-footer at the buzzer in a game against Granger that gave the Lakers a one-point win. Devin Sluis is a 6-0 senior who can do it all.
"He is a slasher," Garner said of Sluis. "He's quick and he can shoot the mid-range jumper."
That usually translates into him pulling up off a penetrating move and knocking down an 8- or 10-footer. Connor Garner, a 6-2 junior, is a point guard who runs the offense and is a good distributor.
The team's strength is quickness and handling the ball well. Hopefully, the Lakers can wear down the opposition."Our kids are well conditioned," said Garner.
GIRLS: Athleticism abounds on the Bonneville girls basketball team. However, much of it is possessed by girls whose main sports are something other than basketball.
"We are real athletic," said first-year coach Mike Russell about his girls. He added, "We are just trying to convert their athleticism to basketball."
Point guard Roxie McFarland is "an extremely athletic girl," according to Russell. But as a senior, she is just learning basketball and has already signed a full-ride scholarship with the University of New Mexico for soccer. She averages about five assists per game.
Caitlin Penrod is a junior power forward who is not only athletic but is physically powerful as well. She is also a volleyball standout.
"She is as strong as an ox," said Russell. "She has an amazing work ethic."
Penrod is the second-leading scorer on the team at just under 10 points per game.
The leading scorer on the team actually counts basketball as her main sport. Jen Bell is a 5-8 senior guard who does everything well and averages 12 points per game.
"She has a great jumpshot," said Russell. "She has the ability to create a shot for herself."
The title of leading rebounder on the team belongs to Jordyn Bell, a smallish forward at 5-9 but very adept at getting to the ball.
"She has a knack of being where the ball is," Russell said.
Two additional seniors are Marissa Ervin and Hillary Stevens, who Russell defines as role players who do their job really well.
Russell believes that last year's 5-16 finish is an advantage because teams don't really know about them this year."Our goal," he said, "is to finish in the top three."
