GATLIN TO CHALLENGE SUSPENSION: Olympic champion sprinter Justin Gatlin will challenge his four-year doping suspension and may take the case to federal court, his attorney said.

JONES WANTS PROBATION: Former Olympic champion Marion Jones says she has been punished enough and should not have to go to prison for lying about steroids and check fraud in White Plains, N.Y.

In court papers filed on New Year's Eve, Jones' lawyers asked a federal judge to let her off with probation when he sentences her next week.

GRIZZLIES DEFENSEMAN PROMOTED: Utah Grizzlies coach Jason Christie announced that defenseman Andy Sertich has been recalled to the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Sertich leaves Utah with three goals and 14 assists in 29 games. He is tied for the team lead with eight power-play points (one goal, seven assists). The second-year pro and former Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick makes his first trip to the AHL after appearing in every Utah game since the start of the 2006-07 season.

BRUINS ACQUIRE HNIDY: The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Shane Hnidy and a sixth-round draft pick from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday in exchange for forward Brandon Bochenski.


HAHNEMANN CONTRACT EXTENDED: American goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann's contract with Reading has been extended through the 2008-09 season.
