Salt Lake City police arrested four adults and one juvenile early on New Year's Day after one officer spotted the group racing from a convenience store to a car clutching beer that had reportedly been stolen.

A Salt Lake police sergeant spotted the group running from the store at 900 West and 800 South at 4:22 a.m. with the beer. He summoned backup officers, pursued the group's vehicle and police stopped it at 675 South and 800 West.

After the five people were removed from the car, police learned this was not simply shoplifting — as they first expected — but a robbery, because the convenience store clerk had been assaulted, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. J. R. Nelson.

The four adults ranging in age from 18 to 22 were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and the 17-year-old juvenile was taken to a juvenile detention facility.
