JEROME, Idaho — The Jerome Police Department is examining surveillance video of a vehicle that drove onto the Jerome Elementary School grounds and ran over five maple trees planted by three students a decade ago.

The former students, who are now in their 20s, returned to see the damage that was caused early Monday morning.

Justine Potter, Rachel Choate and Catherine Hendrickson planted the trees that had since grown about 25 feet.

Ten years ago the students raised money to buy the trees through car washes and bake sales so that the playground would have shade for children.

Officials estimate the damage to the area at about $1,000.
