SACRAMENTO, Calif. Sacramento's Ron Artest could face possible surgery this week to remove chipped bone fragments in his right elbow, a team spokesman said.
Artest missed his second straight game Sunday against Phoenix. The Kings are 2-7 without him. He is averaging 19.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 19 games this season. An eight-year veteran, Artest missed the first seven games this season while serving a suspension. He missed a Nov. 21 game in Phoenix because he was visiting his ailing daughter.
KNICKS WITHOUT CRAWFORD, MARBURY: Jamal Crawford missed the Knicks' game against Chicago on Sunday because of a bruised right hand, leaving New York without its normal starting backcourt. Stephon Marbury was back with the team after missing most of the month following the death of his father, but wasn't in uniform and it isn't known when he will rejoin the lineup.
Crawford, who leads the Knicks with 19.2 points per game, was hurt Friday during practice when he banged his hand into a teammate's knee. X-rays before Sunday's game were negative, and the Knicks didn't say how long Crawford would be out.
Marbury has played in just three of 13 games since Donald Marbury died during the Knicks' loss to Phoenix on Dec. 2. Nate Robinson and Quentin Richardson started at guard for the Knicks.
SPURS SIGN DERMARR JOHNSON: The San Antonio Spurs signed journeyman guard DerMarr Johnson and waived 2007 draft pick Marcus Williams. Johnson has played for Atlanta, New York and Denver during a seven-year NBA career that was interrupted when he broke his neck in a car accident in 2002. He returned to the NBA 1 1/2 years later with the Knicks.
The 27-year-old Johnson had his best season in 2001-02, when he averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds in 72 games with the Hawks. His career averages are 6.2 points and 2.3 rebounds. He started this season with the Spurs' NBA Development League team in Austin, averaging 15.8 points and 6.0 rebounds in 10 games.
Williams, the 33rd pick in the draft, appeared in his only game with the Spurs on Wednesday against Chicago.
