CINCINNATI — Macy's Inc. says it will close nine underperforming stores nationwide, including the Family Center store at Riverdale, Utah.

Three stores are being closed in Ohio, along with one in Indianapolis; one in Lake Charles, La.; another in Oklahoma City; and one each in Dallas and Houston. Final clearance sales at those stores, and the one in Utah, will begin on varying schedules within the next several weeks.

Macy's chairman and chief executive officer Terry Lundgren said Friday that the decision to close stores is difficult but was done in locations with declining sales and insufficient growth opportunities.

Macy's operates more than 850 department stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico under the names Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
