ATHOL, Idaho (AP) — Police in northern Idaho are on the lookout for the thieves responsible for breaking into the Athol City Hall and snatching dozens of gift cards destined for community food bank clients.

Police say the burglars broke through three locked doors and left behind a trail of splintered wood and torn holiday wrapping paper.

Athol City Clerk and Treasurer Charlotte Hooper said those responsible made off with nearly $3,000 in grocery store gift cards. She says the items were taken from the city safe with a key discovered when the office was ransacked.

The gift cards were supposed to be distributed to about 70 needy families served by the ABC Food Bank, which is housed inside the City Hall building.

A disgusted Hooper says the thieves "violated the whole community" with their actions.
