FARMINGTON — A former Centerville police officer facing criminal charges accusing him of assaulting his then-wife and daughter during a family fight will go on trial next year.

John Spencer, 43, made a brief appearance here in 2nd District Court Friday morning.

"We just need a trial date," Spencer's defense attorney, Greg Skordas, told the judge.

The judge set a trial beginning Feb. 26. Spencer has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree felony child abuse; domestic violence in the presence of a child and aggravated assault, both third-degree felonies; and interrupting a communications device, a class B misdemeanor.

Spencer was arrested in May by Layton police after a woman showed up at Salt Lake Regional Hospital, saying she and her 5-year-old daughter had suffered bruises and cuts in a family fight.

Shortly after the incident, the Centerville Police Department placed Spencer on paid administrative leave while it conducted an internal affairs investigation. He later resigned, police said Friday.

Spencer and his wife have since divorced, Skordas said.
