GUNNISON — Inmates at the Central Utah Correctional Facility have prepared food baskets for needy families in the area.

Using money they raised throughout the year, about 500 inmates were able to put together about 75 baskets of non-perishable food. The baskets have about $42 worth of food in each. About $500 went to the local food bank.

This is the 10th year the inmates have raised money to help local community members in need. The Utah Department of Corrections said in years past, they have donated to the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"The ultimate goal, of course, with these fund raisers is to serve the community," said deputy warden Robert Judd. "Service is the key to rehabilitation."
