A woman died Wednesday evening after she was hit by a car while trying to cross North Temple on foot.
The woman, 21, of Peru was about 200 feet from the nearest streetlight at about 1800 West when she was hit, said Salt Lake City Lt. Lamar Yule. She may have misjudged the speed of oncoming cars, which travel at 50 mph in that area.
Witnesses told police they didn't see the woman, who was not in a crosswalk, until she had been hit. The street was dark and she was wearing dark clothing, Yule said.
A medical helicopter was called, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released because police have been unable to reach her family in Peru.
North Temple between Redwood Road and 2000 West was closed for about two hours following the 6:10 p.m. crash.
An investigation into the auto-pedestrian accident is ongoing, Yule said. No citations had been issued Wednesday night.
