MOAB — A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was called in to rescue a pair of hikers who became lost in a canyon.

The Grand County Sheriff's Office said the couple went hiking Monday afternoon in Culvert Canyon and got lost. It then got dark, and temperatures dropped to as low as 12 degrees, deputies said.

The couple called for help, but searchers were unable to reach them because the trail was hazardous and impassable in some areas, due to snow and ice.

About 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, the DPS helicopter spotted the lost hikers near the trail next to a fire they had built to stay warm. The helicopter set down near there and rescued them.

Deputies said the 24-year-old man, 27-year-old woman and their dog, "Lucky," were tired, hungry and cold, but otherwise OK.
