A doctor accused of operating a prescription drug dealing ring will undergo an evaluation at the Utah State Prison before he is sentenced.

Dr. Alexander Theodore faced a sentencing hearing on Friday in Salt Lake City's 3rd District Court, where he could have faced up to 15 years in prison on drug charges. Instead, court records say, a judge ordered a diagnostic evaluation.

Theodore pleaded guilty to five counts of distributing a controlled substance, a second-degree felony. He is accused of writing thousands of prescriptions for OxyContin to more than 200 people, who sold the drugs on the street.

Theodore, 64, will return to court Feb. 25 for sentencing.
