Granger Elementary School in South Salt Lake was temporarily locked down this morning while police looked for a man wanted on parole violation who fled from officers.
At 9:45 a.m. an officer was checking registrations on cars parked at Reams, 2783 S. State, when he came across a car that was registered to a man who was wanted for a parole violation, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.
Two officers stood by waiting for the man to return to his car. But when he came out of the store he spotted the officers and ran, Keller said.
The man ran through a nearby neighborhood. Granger Elementary School, 200 East Claybourne Ave. (2780 South), was nearby and locked down as a precaution. The officers followed the man's footsteps in the snow through some open gates and into a yard.
The fenced yard had a couple of out buildings and a garbage can. The officers thoroughly searched the yard and found the man hiding in the trash can, Keller said.
The 28-year-old man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on parole violation and investigation of other charges.
