SOFTBALL: The Wildcats announced plans to add women's softball as an NCAA sport beginning in the 2009-10 school year. "We are thrilled to be adding women's softball to our athletic department and university," said Weber State director of athletics Jerry Graybeal. "We have been planning to add a women's sport for some time, and softball is a perfect fit." Graybeal said a search for a softball coach will begin soon after the first of the year. Weber State will begin playing softball as an independent with the intention of joining a conference in the near future.
FOOTBALL: Offensive tackle David Hale has been named first team All-America (Division FCS) by The American Football Coaches Association. Hale joins Montana's Kroy Biermann as the two players from the Big Sky Conference honored by the association. Hale concluded his career at Weber State this season. He earned four varsity letters playing in 42 career games and was a starter in 36 straight games dating back to his first season (2004).
GYMNASTICS: Season tickets for Utah State gymnastics are now on sale. Prices are $25 for adults and $5 for youths, which includes seven dates a team exhibition on Jan. 8, WAC dual meets with Sacramento State and Boise State on Jan. 18 and 22; against BYU and New Hampshire on Feb. 15; vs. Denver on Feb. 29; WAC foe San Jose State on March 7 and Southern Utah on March 21. All USU home meets begin at 6:30 p.m.
SKIING: The Utes' Alpine and Nordic ski teams returned this week from their on-snow Thanksgiving camps. The alpine team spent four days skiing in Colorado, while the Nordic team spent a week skiing and racing in Montana.
SWIMMING: The swimming and diving teams will resume competition this weekend at the UNLV Invitational. The Utes will travel to Las Vegas for the three-day invitational, which will feature a format similar to that of the MWC Championships. Preliminaries will take place in the morning and the top swimmers will return each evening for the finals. The Utah women sit at 3-3 in dual meet competition and 2-1 in the MWC. The Ute men are 0-3 in duals and 0-1 in the MWC.
