St. George police were called to deal with a bizarre drunk driving case in which they arrested two people for driving the same car.

Police said it started as a car burglary in progress on Dec. 8, when a couple came out of the state liquor store at 929 W. Sunset Blvd., to see a man and a woman sitting in their car.

"They ask what they're doing in there and the man says, 'Man, I was drunk. I got in the wrong vehicle. I thought it was my car,'" St. George Police Sgt. Craig Harding said Tuesday.

Then the couple noticed the man had some property he had taken from their car. Police said he threw it back in the car as the woman he was with got into their own vehicle.

As officers responded to a 911 call, they saw the man driving off with the woman in the passenger's seat.

"As we stop the car, he jumps in the back seat, she slides over, he jumps in the passenger seat and she starts to drive away. An off-duty officer had seen them both driving," Harding said.

Police arrested a 44-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man on suspicion of DUI, vehicle burglary, theft, and driving on a suspended license. The pair were later booked into the Purgatory Jail, where they posted bail a short time later.
