PARAGONAH, Iron County — A man was killed and an Iron County sheriff's deputy was badly injured Thursday as a result of a crash on I-15.

Police had few details about the 3:20 p.m. crash by late Thursday but said it started with the collision of a truck and a sport-utility vehicle in northbound lanes near mile marker 81.

The truck driver died. His name has not been released.

About 40 minutes after the initial crash, the deputy was hit by a semitrailer truck, said Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Cameron Roden. The deputy was at the scene to help with traffic control and was getting out of his patrol car when he was struck.

The deputy, whose name has not bee released, was taken to Valley View Medical Center with several broken bones.
