It's no secret that Utah is a growing state. In 1920, only $18.3 million was collected in property taxes. Property taxes hit the $1 billion mark in 1997 and the $2 billion in 2006. Here's a look at this year's breakdown of where your property tax dollars are going:

• School districts: $1.27 billion — 56 percent

• Counties: $406.6 million — 18 percent

• Cities and towns: $332.7 million — 15 percent

• Special districts: $255.5 million — 11 percent
