I have been reading a lot about problems with the Utah Department of Corrections. It is regrettable that the state of Utah thinks it will get top quality staff by paying $13.73 an hour. McDonald's or any other fast-food restaurant nearly pays this kind of wage.

Working in a prison is a much underappreciated job. Staff members not only risk their lives but their health and their family's health. Until we pay these officers what they deserve, we will continue to have vacancies, turnover and inexperienced staff running a billion-dollar industry.
