As shoppers usher in the holiday season this Friday by filling their carts with discount buys, a local service group hopes they'll keep needy children in mind.
The Hispano-Latino Rotary Club of Salt Lake and Clinica Hispana are together sponsoring a drive for new toys and gently used clothing to distribute to low-income children, says Dr. Cesar Diaz, president of the Rotary Club.
Forty Rotarians also are kicking off the holidays on Friday and will be donating 2,500 pounds of school supplies, along with wheelchairs and clothing.
"Each one of us is bringing 50 pounds of (school) supplies," Diaz says.
For the local toy drive, Diaz says he's hoping to top last year's distribution of toys to about 3,000 children in Logan, Park City, Wendover and Salt Lake City.
The toy distribution will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Midvale Community Center, 697 W. Center St. (7720 South). For more information, contact Diaz at email@example.com.
