Lillian Gardiner of Provo thinks that we are not conserving gas (Readers' Forum, Nov. 20). She also thinks that the government should subsidize the purchase of hybrid vehicles. If the hybrids are such a great idea, they don't need to be subsidized.

As far as the conserving of gas, as long as no one else wants gas or oil, then we can conserve. However, populations expand and there are other markets, such as China, coming online. The best way to reduce the price of oil is to bring more to market, not less. The United States has plenty of oil and could be oil-independent. We just need to get the government less involved in our lives.
