South Salt Lake police hope a weekend arrest puts an end to a recent rash of vehicle break-ins.

The parking lot at Century Theaters, near 3300 South State, has been a heavy target for car burglars as of late, said police detective Gary Keller. The offender was doing more than just smashing windows and grabbing items. He was breaking into cars, ripping out their stereos and spending some extended time in the vehicles causing damage, he said.

Police had been making extra patrols in the area and even setting up decoys. Saturday, about 12:30 a.m., officers spotted a man near the theater walking with a large bag. Inside the bag was a rifle that police believe he had just stolen out of car, Keller said.

As soon as the man saw the officers, he dropped his bag along with several stereos and other items he was holding in his coat, Keller said.

The man climbed one chain-link fence trying to get away. But officers caught up to him by the second fence and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint, he said.

The 21-year-old man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of a number of charges.
