Geographically speaking, there's a reason Pine View and Sky View have never met on the gridiron. Besides the fact they were in different classifications prior to this year, St. George and Smithfield are located at the extreme opposite ends of the state, a driving distance according to Mapquest of 386 miles or a painful five hours and 40 minutes.
Pine View students could drive to Disneyland in that same time, whereas Sky View students could be in Boise with more than 90 minutes to spare.
Thursday night at 6, these schools with a "View" will converge at Rice-Eccles Stadium in a 4A semifinal that will demonstrate when it comes to football, these schools are more similar than different.
Primary colors like black and baby blue aside, offensively both Sky View and Pine View like to spread it out with four wide receiver sets and score points in bunches. Pine View is averaging 40.3 points per game this year, whereas Sky View is averaging just under 31 points.
"They've got a lot of speed and they execute very well," said Sky View coach Craig Anhder.
For Region 5 champion Sky View, this week's semifinal appearance marks a 20-year drought dating back to 1987.
As for Region 9 champion Pine View, it should feel right at home on the U.'s turf. In 2004 and 2005, the Panthers played two games at Rice-Eccles Stadium, ultimately losing in the 3A state championship each time.
Despite making the jump to 4A this year, Pine View's coaching staff had high expectations the entire time.
"We thought coming in, and I'm not going to lie, I thought we were a semifinal team," said Pine View assistant coach Todd Shaw. "I'm not surprised we're in the semifinals. I thought we had the kids and they worked hard very hard in the offseason."
Beyond the semifinals, Shaw said the Panthers aren't making any wild assertions based on the quality of the 4A landscape.
Thursday's tripleheader nightcap at the U. figures to be extremely competitive based on common opponents. Sky View and Pine View each played Mountain View and Bountiful this year. Sky View beat Bountiful 27-10 during Region 5 play and Mountain View 45-23 in the 4A quarterfinals. As for Pine View, it beat Mountain View 42-14 in Week 1 and then squeaked by Bountiful 13-10 in the quarterfinals.
Pine View actually trailed Bountiful 10-0 last week before rallying in the fourth quarter for the win. Shaw said the Panthers squandered numerous red zone opportunities prior to the fourth quarter, and against Sky View's stingy defense they can't afford to leave points on the field.
"From a defensive standpoint, they're going to run a lot of different coverages at us," said Shaw. "They're very athletic and they'll do a lot of different things."
Sky View's two losses this year were to Logan (17-14) and Bonneville (16-14). Since the Bonneville loss the Bobcats have won five straight by an average of 18 points per game.
"We're happy and thrilled we get to play another week," said Anhder. "We're excited to go to Rice-Eccles Stadium, the kids have worked extremely hard."After losing in the quarterfinals last year despite an 11-0 record, you can bet Sky View won't be taking anything for granted against Pine View.
