The candidacy of Mitt Romney is about more than the man himself. Not too many years ago it was common to believe that no Latter-day Saint could be president of the United States. It was just a part of being a member of a religious minority. Perhaps Latter-day Saints have become too optimistic about America over the past few years.

But America is not about self-defeating pragmatism. It is the land of the impossible becoming possible. It is the land of the Golden Spike. It is the land of the space shuttle and the Mars Lander. It is not acceptable for Mitt Romney to be dismissed based on his religion. Regardless of the outcome for Mr. Romney, the treatment of his religion in the political realm will have far-reaching effects.
