LAS VEGAS — BYU's hopes for a Mountain West Conference women's soccer regular-season championship were dashed Friday night as as the Cougars fell 1-0 in double overtime at UNLV.

And the BYU's hopes for a first-round bye in next week's MWC Tournament — hosted by the Cougars at South Field — may also follow suit.

UNLV's Katie Carney scored the sole goal in the third minute of the second overtime as the Rebels (10-4-5 overall, 5-1-1 MWC) won the regular-season title by upsetting the 19th-ranked Cougars (14-3-2, 4-3-0).

The Cougars will be waiting the outcome of today's match between Utah (11-3-4, 3-1-2) and Wyoming (8-9-0, 3-3-0) in Laramie. Utah finishes second with a win or tie and earns a first-round tournament bye. If Wyoming upsets Utah, the Cougars finish second and receive the bye.

The top six Mountain West teams advance to the tournament, with seeds Nos. 3 through 6 playing in Wednesday's quarterfinals. The Nos. 1 and 2 teams open in Thursday's semis.
