Davis (7-4, 4-3) at Bingham (10-1, 5-0)
5A State Tournament quarterfinal game
Friday, 4 p.m.
Parry's Power Guide: Bingham by 17
All-time series: Davis 12-3-1.
Pardon Davis and Timpanogos, but they aren't exactly clamoring over the seemingly inevitable monstrous semifinal showdown between Alta and Bingham like everybody else in the state.
And no offense to the Darts and Timberwolves, but their best chance against the top two teams in the state might be getting overlooked by the Miners and Hawks.
Then again, that still might not be enough against powerhouse Bingham, which features one of the state's top rushers in Sam Langi, one of the best tight ends around in Austin Holt and perhaps the best kicker on the planet in Justin Sorensen.
They've helped the Miners win seven in a row by an average of 31.9 points.
Davis does have a recent history of knocking off a heavy favorite, though. Just last season, the Darts upended then-defending-champion Skyline in the first round. That, however, led to a disappointing 5A quarterfinal 35-10 loss to guess who? yep, Bingham.
Perhaps the Darts will use that game as a revenge factor and rewind back to the school's 7-0 win over the Miners in the 2004 quarterfinals for some we-can-do-it motivation.
(By the way, are these schools contracted to play each other in the quarterfinals, or what? This will be the third time in four years they've played in this round, with the previous winners going on to win the state title.)
The Darts have one of the stingiest defenses, but their offense hadn't exactly lit up the 5A ranks until last week. They hope their 38-12 win over Pleasant Grove was a sign of scores to come. And, hey, if running backs Steven Pitcher and Kyle Burk can match their output from last week both had 100-plus yards rushing and they combined to score five TDs Davis might be in business after a rocky regular season.
Davis has won four of five, coming into the quarterfinals. Somewhat surprisingly, the biggest margin of victory for the Darts came last week against Region 4 co-champ Pleasant Grove. Before that, Davis had beaten Viewmont by a field goal (3-0), Fremont by an extra point (7-6) and first-year Syracuse by a touchdown and missed PAT (14-6). In the middle of that close-call spurt, the Darts fell to Northridge in double overtime 21-20.The Darts can only hope their game against Bingham will be anywhere near that close.
