ISI SOFELE, Cottonwood, football: This junior Colt tailback ensured that the opening round of the 4A state tournament wasn't a total disaster for Region 6.
Sofele rushed for 104 yards, including the game-winning 18-yard touchdown run in overtime, as Cottonwood survived a first-round scare with a 27-21 win over Dixie. Of the five Region 6 teams in the playoffs, Cottonwood was the only team to win.
It was Sofele's second TD of the game, raising his season total to 16 in 11 games. He's also rushed for 1,403 yards this year.
As a sophomore last year, Sofele racked up 1,650 all-purpose yards.
Sofele and Cottonwood will have their hands full this Friday as they take on No. 1 Timpview in the 4A quarterfinals.
CHELSEY GARFIELD, Morgan, volleyball: This senior was as close to unstoppable as an individual player can get in leading the Trojans to a 3A championship last weekend. In addition to setting a state record for kills in a single match (47), she had 12 solo blocks, 11 block assists and nine digs in the marathon title match.
"Chelsey is smart, one of the best players I've coached," said coach Liz Wiscombe of the middle hitter.Garfield has led the Trojan offense all season, but she was consistently dominant in the playoffs with 24 combined kills against Judge and Juan Diego and 22 kills in the semifinal win over Delta. She also had six blocks in that win.
