OREM — The Wasatch Wasps did something they hadn't done all year in the 3A volleyball tournament. They defeated Region 10 rival Park City and in the process took sixth place in the 3A tourney.

Park City, which finished third in Region 10, took eighth as Wasatch came back from a two-game deficit to take the match in a marathon thriller — 18-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-13.

"Our team has been very dramatic all year, so up here we didn't expect anything less. We joked about this match going to five games before it started, so we weren't intimidated after we lost the first two," said Wasatch coach Joe Mellen.

The Wasps lost twice to Park City in the regular season and they came back from a two games to one deficit to be judge in their previous match.

Mellen said the Wasps have really come together as a group in the past couple of weeks, and he's happy with the balanced attack his team has put together.

Elise Hackamack and Jessica Earnshaw each put down seven kills to lead the Wasatch attack, and Rachel Rodgers added six.

Park City was led by senior hitter Alex Shearer, who finished with a game-high 16 kills. Lauren Deane finished with 13 kills, and Sammy Baker with six kills and several key blocks — but it just wasn't enough to defeat Wasatch.
