PLAYER TO WATCH

GARTRELL JOHNSON, RB: The reigning Mountain West Conference offensive player of the week rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns in last weekend's 48-23 win at UNLV.

KEY MATCHUP

UTAH DEFENSE vs. CSU GROUND GAME: The Utes have made strides defending the run in recent weeks, holding their last three opponents to 94 yards or less. CSU averages 160.9 yards rushing per game — second-best in the MWC.

THE STAKES

For Utah ... A 6-3 mark heading into a bye week. A victory would make the Utes bowl-eligible entering a season-ending stretch featuring games against Wyoming, New Mexico and BYU.

For Colorado State ... With head coach Sonny Lubick pondering retirement at season's end, the Rams are in position to send him out with a .500 mark in his final year. To do so, however, CSU needs to win its final five games.

THE TRENDS

For Utah ... The Utes have won four consecutive games and still harbor hopes of competing for the conference title. The best measuring stick is the play of tailback Darrell Mack. Utah is 5-0 when he runs for 100 yards or more.

For Colorado State ... The Rams were quite opportunistic last week. They forced four turnovers in the first half and scored 17 straight points to pull away.

THE EDGE

Utah will win if ... the Utes are able to avoid turnovers. UNLV dominated CSU statistically last week, but could not overcome five turnovers.

Colorado State will win if ... the Rams can bottle up the success they had in Las Vegas. After snapping a 13-game losing skid last week, they're eager to continue moving in the other direction.
