Spanish Fork (6-5, 2-3) at Layton (9-1, 6-0)

5A State Tournament first round

Parry's Power Guide: Layton by 18

All-time series: First meeting

On paper, there's no reason to think Region 1 champion Layton won't cruise into the quarterfinals.

Offensively, the Lancers are loaded with stars like LaVaughan Jackson, James Adams, Gavin Green and Matt Putnam, and as a result they average 30 points a game. Defensively, Chad Willson anchors one of 5A's best, a unit that only surrenders 10 points per game. Oh yeah, and for good measure, if that isn't proof this game should be lopsided, the Lancers opponent needed to win a play-in game Tuesday just to qualify for the state tournament.

All one needs to do is look a little deeper to realize things aren't what they seem. Make no mistake, Layton is as good as advertised, but Spanish Fork is much better than its 6-5 record.

The Dons are the only team to hang with Timpview this year, and as for their three region losses, they were by a combined 14 points. In a must-win situation in Tuesday's play-in game, Spanish Fork avenged one of those region losses by trouncing Lone Peak 38-14.

Spanish Fork needs Breck Lewis, who's passed for 27 touchdowns this year, to have another fantastic game like he didn't against Lone peak on Tuesday.
