FILLMORE — A sport utility vehicle filled with students traveling from Laramie, Wyo., to Los Angeles rolled on I-15 near Fillmore early Tuesday, killing one and critically injuring another, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Samuel Wasson, 19, of Portland, Ore., was a passenger in the back and was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled about 3:30 a.m. Investigators believe the driver fell asleep, then overcorrected, trooper Cameron Roden said.

A 23-year-old woman also was ejected from the vehicle. She was flown to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo in critical condition.

The driver and two other passengers were wearing seat belts and survived the crash.

Roden said there was at least one open container of alcohol in the SUV, and troopers were trying to determine if that was a factor in the crash.

The students were on their way to back to Loyola Marymount University from a university-related research trip, Roden said.
