Reading Sen. Howard Stephenson's "My View" reminded me anew of the maternalistic attitude of our Republican-dominated state Legislature. They continually parade before us the reasons they can't adequately fund education. We, the people of Utah, when asked by Dan Jones just last year about budget surpluses suggested we spend the surplus on public education. What did Stephenson and his illuminated majority give the state? Vouchers — an entitlement program. What will we get this year with another looming surplus? There always seems to be enough money to "lure" in big business but never enough for schools. The majority is not being heard on this issue. Please adequately fund public education. Public education will always be the avenue for the least of us. Don't turn your nose up at our need.
