BYU was picked to repeat as Mountain West champion in the 2007 men's basketball preseason media poll. The Cougar women were picked to finish third in the league behind Wyoming and TCU.
The Utah men came in third behind the Cougars and UNLV, while the Utah women were picked to finish fifth.
In the men's preseason poll, five teams received at least one first-place vote, with BYU capturing 15 of 22. MWC tournament champion UNLV (146 points) and Utah (142 points) each had two first-place votes. New Mexico (two) and San Diego State (one) also received first-place votes.
Two junior centers from the state of Utah, BYU's Trent Plaisted and Utah's Luke Nevill, were selected to the all-conference team, while the Cougars' Jimmer Fredette was chosen as the league's top freshman.
Utah junior Morgan Warburton and BYU senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling were also preseason all-conference selections, and Utah's Leilani Mitchell was chosen as the league's top newcomer.
