An upcoming series of films and panel discussions at Fort Douglas is targeted at bringing a broader understanding of immigration to the community.

The Utah League of Women Voters and the Salt Lake City Film Center have partnered to bring the community discussion to the Fort Douglas Post Theater from Oct. 18 to 27. The local LWV is exploring the topic as part of the organization's national effort to come out with a position on the issue of immigration reform.

The film series explores topics such as the history of immigration, special immigration cases, deportation and illegal immigration. It starts at 11 a.m. Thursday with the four-part series "Destination America," which tells the story of why four immigrants chose to come to America and what they left behind in their homelands. Some other titles include "Ellis Island," "Crossing Arizona" and "The Gatekeeper."

On Oct. 26, there will be a community discussion on immigration realities and policies from 9 a.m. to noon.
