A man was shot and killed by a Salt Lake City police officer Wednesday night after he allegedly stabbed two people during a crime spree that stretched through Pioneer Park.

One of the stabbing victims died.

The other man was near Iggy's restaurant at the corner of 300 South and 400 West when he was stabbed. He had several knife wounds in his chest and upper body and was undergoing surgery Wednesday night at a local hospital. His condition was listed as critical, said Salt Lake City Police spokesman Det. Jared Wihongi.

Police were first contacted about the stabbing near the restaurant at 9:45 p.m. Federal marshals responded to the scene and were told by witnesses that a black male was involved in the stabbing incident.

A short time later police learned of a stabbing in Pioneer Park. A Salt Lake City officer responding to the area saw a man matching the description from the first stabbing near the northeast corner of the park.

"She challenged him, he presented a threat, and she used deadly force to neutralize that threat," Wihongi said.

The name of the officer has not been released. By midnight Wednesday, police had not identified the man who was shot, Wihongi said.

Wihongi said he had no information about the stabbing victims.

Pioneer Park was closed Wednesday night but Wihongi expected it would be reopened sometime today.
