OGDEN Three Weber State University football players have been cited by campus police in relation to a Monday shoplifting incident at the campus bookstore.
Starting quarterback Cameron Higgins as well as redshirting freshmen Marvin Walker and Alex Tupulua were cited.
The misdemeanor citations have been handed over to the Ogden City Justice Court for review, according to university spokesman John Kowalewski.
Weber State coach Ron McBride acknowledged some frustration that players would be involved with such a thing and has handed down suspensions to the players. Higgins, who led the team to its first victory of the season last week with four touchdown passes, will not make the trip with the team to Greeley, Colo., where the Wildcats will face Northern Colorado.
"I'm not going to worry about it," McBride said. "We just have to move on and make the best of the situation."
With Higgins suspended and former starter Jimmy Barnes out with an injured left knee, junior college transfer Brendon Doyle will start for the Wildcats.
"You never want to see that happen," Doyle said. "But I'm definitely thankful for the opportunity."
Kowalewski also refused to release details about the shoplifting incident because the case was incomplete, he said.Under Utah law, shoplifting is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by fines of up to $1,000 and six months in jail.
