LEHI — After the closest first-day matches in the history of the Arizona-Utah Shootout, the Utah team takes a slim one-point lead into the final day at Thanksgiving Point GC.

Utah leads 18 1/2 to 17 1/2 in the Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring 12 players for each side.

Arizona edged Utah 10-8 in the Foursomes segment (alternating shot) Monday, but Utah won the afternoon four-ball matches, 10 1/2 to 7 1/2.

Top point getters for Utah were Kirk Siddens and Steve Poulson who teamed for 5 3/8 points out of a possible six. The Arizona women, Tui Selvaratnam and Lynn Simmons, combined for five points to lead Arizona.

While Arizona got the better of Utah in the women's division, Utah had the edge in the senior and at-large categories. Senior golfers Steve Brinton and Mike Hacker teamed to win four of six possible points.

There was a frost delay in the morning and the matches got started an hour behind schedule and finished at the last possible minute before dark.

The format shifts to individual matches Tuesday morning.

The series, which began in 1991, is tied at eight wins each.
