One man was shot three times during what may have been an armed robbery Saturday afternoon at a Salt Lake City jewelry store.

The victim, an employee at The Mouthpiece Company, located between State and Main on 1300 South, was shot twice in the body and once in the face after another man entered the store and an altercation led to an exchange of gunfire, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Rich Brede.

The employee was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

After the shooting, the assailant, described as a black man 6 feet, 2 inches tall, wearing a black shirt and red and white shoes, fled the scene heading south in a gray sedan.

Investigators have recovered two handguns, one in the store and one in the parking lot, though they don't know to whom the guns belong.

Gunfire was responsible for at least four holes in the store's walls, Brede said.

"We're not sure what the intentions were, if this was a robbery gone bad or if the individuals knew each other," he said.
