TOOELE — In a game where it was apparent that it was a battle of who could make the least amount of mistakes, Provo came out on top capitalizing on Tooele's mistakes en route to a 13-3 victory

Matt Griner was able to ignore the harsh passing conditions to throw for 124 yards and a touchdown to Kyler Hamilton, who had 87 yards of his own on four catches.

After forcing a three and out for Tooele, Provo compiled a descent drive behind their running game. Consecutive runs of 14 and 11 yards for Imelia Fonva and Griner helped the Bulldogs scratch into Tooele territory.

Graham Sullivan hauled in a pass from Griner to get down to the Tooele 20-yard line, but the drive stalled and Trent Andrus was short on his 38-yard field goal attempt.

Tooele was able to pounce on a bad snap on Provo's next drive 22 yards away from the end zone, but the Buffalo offense was unable to capitalize on the Bulldog mistake and turned it over on downs.

Looking to make amends on offense, Tooele finally moved the ball with the help of Trifon Gochis scrambling out of the pocket and finding Matt Gochis for 13 yards and Jordan Clemente for 16, but the Buffaloes settled for a field goal to go up 3-0.

The steady rain got the best of both teams entering the second half as Provo's Cameron Meyers fumbled on the first play of the half. However, Tooele didn't take advantage of the great field position as Jordon Biorge also coughed up the ball inside the Bulldog 20.

Unfortunately for Tooele, the fumbling theme continued as Gochis ran an option play left but the pitch got away from him, and Josh Mortensen was able to scoop the ball up on the run and score for a 6-3 Provo lead.

Provo's Fonva managed to slip out of reach a few arm tackles to start off his team's next drive with a 12-yard run. The successful running game gave way to Griner's arm as he completed two passes to Tyler Hamilton for 29 yards and the scoring throw for 22 yards to put his team up 13-3.

In a frantic attempt to rally, Tooele turned to the passing game. Unfortunately, a combination of three Buffalo passers threw more completions to Provo than their own team.

Provo's Mortensen caught one of the sealing interceptions to add to the early fumble recovery for a touchdown to end a great defensive night.

"We switched our defense back to a 3-4 look for this game and it worked out well for us," said coach Clint Christiansen. "Gochis is a good athlete, and we were able to stay in our defensive lanes and contain him."
