Other than a few instances, the phrase "my word is my bond" is no longer water-tight. I am appalled at the number of "cross my heart" vows that are abandoned the moment they are spoken. In fact, they are often made with no intent to perform. No one will allow a solemn promise to keep him from a better deal or a more convenient time. The golden-laced promises of old have disappeared. There are still exceptions, but a valued part of a once-wonderful code of honor has taken flight.
